Learn how to safely and efficiently replace your stove glass with this step-by-step guide from
Sligo Glass Company. Discover expert tips to keep your stove looking great and working
efficiently.
Keep Your Fire Burning Bright
At Sligo Glass Company, we know how important a clear, safe stove is — especially on those cold winter evenings. Over time, stove glass can crack, cloud, or lose its seal, but the good news is that fitting new glass is a simple job you can often do yourself.
Here’s our easy guide to help you fit your stove glass safely and correctly.
🧰 What You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather the following:
- Replacement stove glass (cut to your stove’s exact size – we can cut and supply this for you)
- Heat-resistant rope seal or gasket (if required)
- Heat-resistant adhesive or glass sealant
- Screwdriver or spanner
- Protective gloves
- Soft cloth
🔧 Step 1: Make Sure the Stove is Cold
Always start with a completely cool stove. Never handle robax glass or fittings when the stove
is even slightly warm.
🧼 Step 2: Remove the Door
Lift the stove door off its hinges and place it flat on a padded surface to protect the enamel and
fittings.
🔲 Step 3: Remove the Old Glass
- Carefully unscrew or unclip the metal brackets or retainers that hold the glass in place
- Gently lift out the damaged or cloudy glass
- Take care with broken edges and dispose of the old glass safely
Make a note of how everything was fitted — this will make reassembly easier.
🧽 Step 4: Clean the Frame
Use a soft cloth to clean away any soot, dust, or old sealant. A clean surface ensures your new
glass sits properly and seals effectively.
🧤 Step 5: Fit the New Stove Glass
- Position the new glass carefully into the frame.
- If your stove uses a rope seal, fit it evenly around the glass edge.
- Refit the clips or screws gently — they should be firm but not overly tight.
- Overtightening can cause the glass to crack once heated.
🔥 Step 6: Refit the Door
Reattach the door to the hinges and make sure it closes evenly and seals well against the stove
body.
⏳ Step 7: Allow Sealant to Cure
If you used any adhesive or sealant, allow it to fully cure as per the manufacturer’s instructions
(typically 12–24 hours) before lighting the stove again.
✅ Sligo Glass Company’s Expert Tips
- Always use heat-resistant Robax stove glass — standard glass will not withstand
- stove temperatures.
- When replacing glass, check your rope seal and replace it if worn.
- Clean your stove glass regularly with a non-abrasive cleaner to maintain clear visibility.
